We are fully aware of our responsibilities toward the environment and take measures to avoid any potential negative impacts deriving from our work.

To mark World Environment Day, we take this opportunity to inform you of some of our day-to-day initiatives aimed at creating a better future.

Solar energy

As you know, we have an agricultural business line under the name Las Moreras Fruit & Veggies, one of the main objectives of which is to ensure sustainable development in the Vega Baja del Segura region.

We guarantee fresh produce with total control over the entire process, including responsible and sustainable water management and the use of renewable energies.

With regard to this last point, in the last quarter of 2020 we took the decision to install a next-generation solar panel roof.

In the almost three years to date in which the panels have been operational, we can observe an impressive evolution:

  • In 2020, a mere three months after the panels were up and running, 34% of energy used came from solar energy, saving 1.4 tons of CO2 emissions.
  • In 2021, 41% of total energy used was solar, saving 22.9 tons of unnecessary CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
  • So far in 2022, this strong upward trend continues, with 42% of energy usage coming from solar energy – which is already higher than 2021 and has so far avoided 6.5 tons of CO2 emissions.

The circular economy

Despite all the advantages that electronic devices undoubtedly bring us, in Spain only 25% of waste electrical and electronic equipment is properly recycled.

In order to reduce the environmental impact caused, we are launching the Connect to the Future campaign, distributing second-hand IT equipment in good condition to various social and educational organisations. In so doing, we aim to promote the circular economy, raising awareness about opportunities for reusing these devices and giving them a second lease of life.

Care of the coastline

We are increasingly shocked by the amount of rubbish that ends up out at sea: cigarette butts, plastic containers, etc. All kinds of waste ends up in our oceans.

This year, we have joined forces with Fundación Adecco to help save the planet by cleaning up our seas.

In conjunction with a group of differently-abled individuals, various members of our team participated in a beach clean on La Mata beach in Torrevieja, promoting environmental awareness and responsibility and also developing basic skills and abilities. In addition to collecting rubbish, a workshop on taking care of the local environment was held.

Another of the actions we carried out to take care of the coastline was cleaning the beaches of the Puerto Morelos Park (Mexico). In each of our hotels (The Fives Beach, The Fives Downtown and The Fives Oceanfront) groups of employees were organized to clean the beach and to prevent the sea turtle nesting process from being affected by the waste.

Green zones in our residential areas

Our housing features all sorts of eco-friendly details, in keeping with the following sustainable construction principles:

  • Bioclimatic architecture (dual aspect, cross ventilation, etc.)
  • Building systems which guarantee a high degree of acoustic and technical insulation along with improved air quality.
  • Efficient buildings using energy from renewable sources (air source heat pumps, solar panels, etc.)
  • Efficient use of energy and water.
  • Rainwater harvesting for watering.
  • Introducing tree cover within the buildings and communal areas, using native species which consume less water.
  • Including rubbish and recycling rooms in communal areas and inside each private property.
  • Increasing the percentage of charging points for electric vehicles.
  • Creating shared living and working spaces in the buildings (social clubs, co-working areas, swimming pools, etc.)
